Height measurement guide

Measure height accurately.

Learn how to measure your height at home in five minutes—or estimate someone’s height from a full-body photo when a direct measurement is not possible.

The short answer

To measure height, stand barefoot against a flat wall, look straight ahead, place a hardback book level on top of the head, mark the wall, then measure from the floor to the mark. Repeat once to check the result.

How to measure height at home

The most reliable home method needs a flat wall, hard floor, hardback book, pencil or removable tape, and a tape measure. Avoid carpet, baseboards, and walls that lean or curve.

  1. Remove shoes and bulky hair accessories. Stand in thin socks or barefoot. Flatten hair where practical so the book reaches the top of the head.
  2. Stand against the wall. Keep both feet flat and together, with heels touching the wall. Stand naturally tall without lifting the heels or bending the knees.
  3. Look straight ahead. Keep the head level, with the line from the lower edge of the eye to the top of the ear roughly parallel to the floor.
  4. Place the book on the head. Hold it flat and at a right angle to the wall. Compress the hair gently, then mark where the book’s lower edge meets the wall.
  5. Measure from floor to mark. Keep the tape vertical and record the number to the nearest 1/8 inch or millimeter. Repeat the process and average small differences.

Measuring a child? Ask another person to hold the book and make the mark while the child stands still. Track growth under similar conditions each time.

For the most precise measurement

A properly installed stadiometer is more consistent than a wall-and-book setup. Clinics and gyms often have one. Whether you use a stadiometer or a wall, take repeated measurements under the same conditions.

How to estimate height from a photo

A photograph cannot provide the same certainty as a physical measurement. It can, however, produce a useful estimate when the image contains a person’s full body and a reliable size reference.

  1. Use a clear, full-body image. The top of the head and bottom of the feet must both be visible. Avoid crouching, leaning, or thick platform shoes.
  2. Find a reference of known size. A standard door, sheet of paper, floor tile, or another measured object can provide scale.
  3. Check the depth. The person and reference should be about the same distance from the camera. An object far behind or in front creates a misleading comparison.
  4. Reduce perspective distortion. Images taken from waist or chest height and farther away are usually easier to assess than close, low-angle, or ultra-wide photos.
  5. Compare proportions or use Height AI. Scale the known reference against the person, or use the Height AI iPhone app to analyze the photo. Treat the result as an estimate.

Common mistakes that change the result

  • Shoes: soles and heels add height. Measure barefoot when possible.
  • Soft flooring: carpet can change posture and make the tape difficult to position.
  • Head angle: looking up or down changes the point where the book touches the head.
  • Posture: raised heels, bent knees, slouching, or stretching can shift the result.
  • Time of day: height can vary slightly as the spine compresses during the day. Compare measurements taken at a similar time.
  • Photo perspective: camera angle, lens distortion, and objects at different depths can make photo estimates look more certain than they are.

Height conversion: feet, inches, and centimeters

Use 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters. To convert a height written in feet and inches, multiply the feet by 12, add the remaining inches, then multiply the total by 2.54.

Example: 5 feet 10 inches = (5 × 12) + 10 = 70 inches. Then 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm.

5′ 4″64162.6 cm
5′ 8″68172.7 cm
5′ 10″70177.8 cm
6′ 0″72182.9 cm

Frequently asked questions

What is the most accurate way to measure height?

A wall-mounted stadiometer used on a hard, level floor is the most accurate practical method. At home, use a flat wall, a hardback book, and a tape measure, then repeat the measurement.

Can you measure height from a photo?

You can estimate height from a full-body photo when it includes a reference object of known size. Camera angle, perspective, posture, and lens distortion can reduce accuracy, so a photo result should be treated as an estimate.

What time of day should you measure height?

For consistent comparisons, measure at the same time of day. People are often slightly taller in the morning than in the evening because the spine compresses during the day.

How do you measure height without a tape measure?

Mark the height on a wall, then compare the distance with objects of known length, such as standard sheets of paper. A tape measure or ruler will give a more reliable result when available. See more ways to estimate height without a tape measure.
